The police have issued their latest weekly newsletter covering issues concerning the community in Wealden.

They are asking for feedback in their survey on opinion about local policing. If you want to contribute, go to

There is also a Wealden Neighbourhood Watch meeting taking place at The Civic Centre, Uckfield, at 7 30 pm, on Wednesday, January 28th 2009 to which everyone interested is invited.

Mayfield Chamber of Commerce meeting Jan 2009

I have just finished delivering 500 leaflets around the streets of Mayfield – an education in itself, since I did not realise how many houses there were tucked away round corners of roads or up little driveways on the side.

The purpose of the leaflets is to invite anyone involved in business locally to come along and meet each other and members of the Chamber on Monday, 19th January at 5.30pm in the Rose and Crown. It is the day of the social meeting for the Chamber so we shall be eating at the pub from 6.30pm. But anyone else is welcome to join us beforehand to have a chat about doing business and how we can help each other. Moreover, the drinks are sponsored by Handleys, the Estate Agents, Auctioneers and Valuers.

Since I joined the Chamber a few months ago, I have been trying to encourage anyone who works in Mayfield to join us, not just those who have a “shop” front. The Chamber does a good job of promoting trade for village shops with activities such as the Mayfair and Late Night Christmas Shopping, but it is also there to encourage and support those who have offices or work from home, whether full-time or part-time.

This all ties in with my aim to find premises where people can share local, affordable offices and gain from the support of other business people around them. But even if everyone continues to work from their own homes, the Chamber can still provide a forum to gain help, find references for good local services when required and co-ordinate the needs of all types of business so that we can have a strong voice in talking to the parish and local councils.

Mayor for Mayfield?

Why not a mayor for our village? We have a leader of the parish council but how about raising the profile of the leader by making them mayor and having elections for mayor alongside parish council elections?

Mayfield has lots of ancient traditions and ceremonies (Bonfire parade, Maypole dancing etc) and it would be good to have a village figurehead to represent us at such occasions – and others outside the village.

Would it attract different people from those who are willing to be leaders of the council? Do we have a Boris Johnson or Ken Livingstone in our midst, or do we want one? The people of Hartlepool elected (and re-elected) their football club’s monkey mascot as mayor. So there is plenty of scope for finding someone who uniquely represents our village

As the word “local” becomes more important (local food, local transport, …) I thought it about time to start a blog about my local village, full of life and set in the beautiful countryside of East Sussex
